I started this painting back in 2019 after a long anticipated experience watching a loon lifting their wings up from the water just like the lucky loonie. When I was young I used to love listening to the loons on the lake while canoeing late in the evening. I have seen them many times but never had the opportunity to see them and photograph them behavi ng this way.    On this day we saw a bird far out on a small lake too far to even know what type of bird it was. It appeared to be in distress and knowing that this was a very popular fishing lake with plenty of fishing line and other discarded "garbage" we were worried. It kept splashing about in the water as if something was holding it down. It would leap out of the water and spin quickly like a synchronized swimmer. Eventually it came close enough that we could see it was a loon, I was in awe and so excited though still concerned.   The bird kept going and going. Now lifting is wings just like the lucky loonie.  I was so t

Sheep River/ Bluerock Creek Collection

BLUE DROP This is the first of a series of paintings inspired by the Blue Rock Wildlands and Sheep River Provincial park in Kananaskis Alberta. I loved the shape of the rock, so smooth from the centuries of constant flow of water. It changes it's path, just a little, every year creating these undulous shapes. Blue Drop $250.00CAD 16"x20" Acrylic on Canvas INDIAN OILS Sitting in front of a waterfall watching the weight of the water pound the rocks relentlessly is an incredible feeling. This river could tell many stories about it's ever changing path from the mountains out to the prairies. I painted this one after a plein air watercolour experience when I was struggling with my health last summer. INDIAN OILS, $300.00CAD 18"x24" Acrylic on Canvas THE RIVER BELOW After a day of picnicking letting the kids paddle in the water while you quietly read your book on a hot summer day. You pack up your things for the day and take one last look behin

THUNDERMOON

Image
On our way home from a quick trip out to take photos of the sunset we stopped to watch the full moon rise. It was particularly beautiful over the rolling fields of canola in full bloom. Then a quick gasp when we saw the two deer with velvet covered antlers pop their heads up in the field. Wonderful memories! Incredible moments. 😊 Thundermoon 16"x20" Acrylic on Canvas $210.00 CAD To purchase please contact me here d.nicolaisen@hotmail.com

SPIRIT CROW

Image
This was inspired by from a photograph I took of a passing close encounter with a crow. On a walk by the Bow river I heard him making peculiar noises (as they often do) I stopped and watched him. He too gave me a long stare. He then leaped from his perch and flew straight at me swooping just over my head and carrying on his way. Magical! They are incredibly intelligent birds and I admire them very much! Spirit Crow, 16''x20'' Acrylic on Canvas $210.00 CAD To Purchase please contact me here d.nicolaisen@hotmail.com

WIND IN THE WELLS

Image
Standing at the top of a deep gorge (at Spahats Falls, BC)with a thin waterfall escaping a crack in the cliff on the opposite side. You stand beside the trees that cling to the edge of the cliff. From their branches the moss hangs in long strings that are so light they sway in the wind created by the mini weather system in he gorge. Back and forth the sway like a slow and hula dance.
